Biggles Flies East Red Fox Older Fiction CAPTAIN WE JOHNS 9780099937807 Books

A Biggles in World War 2 story, which is, in my opinion the best part of the series. Of those books, this is probably one of the best. I don't think it's THE best, but it is still pretty good. It is fast-moving and action-packed. There are only 2 real downfalls. One, the lack of actual dogfights, with most of the action being on the ground (I think there is only one dogfight and it isn't that big). As Biggles is a pilot, you'd think there'd be more, he could just as easily have been soldier or sailor here. But it doesn't matter that much, the ground action is still brilliant, and I suppose it's a change. The other problem is that there are too many characters, especially German ones (I think there are about half a dozen people called Von_______), and it's hard to remember when they reappear 6 chapters later.
All up, though, it is still a good book, especially for Biggles fans like me.

Biggles Flies East Red Fox Older Fiction CAPTAIN WE JOHNS 9780099937807 Books Reviews

Old W.E. Johns was a prolific writer of extraordinary vision, and this is one of his greatest Biggles novels. It's a full length story, as opposed to many of his World War One books, which contained series of short stories, at one time published serially in magazines.
In the story, a very young (19-20 yrs old) Biggles is on leave in London during WW1 and is mistakenly identified as a German spy. Intelligence urges him to follow this through, so he joins a German squadron as a double agent.
Tension, adventure, sand storms, and the sands of the Middle East are some of the least of young Biggles' worries, as he meets his arch enemy, Von Stahlein. Algy fans will not be disappointed either, as he has a sizable role.
This is a fabulous novel that will teach children the joys of reading and will enthrall the parents that read it to them as well.
W.E.Johns only book written for adult readers. An enjoyable read but why the foot notes? Most readers would know what the words meant. has a dictionary too.
Excellent product delivered as advertised
Very good. Von Stalhein gets introduced and Algy and Raymond also get nice roles. Great twist at the end, the suspense keeps going through the whole story.
One of the best.
A good story. intended for boys. Readable and reasonably plausible. Easy to read, and fun.
This is an interesting read in several aspects.
Of all Biggles' adventures I think that the Great War episodes are those with the highest realism. It is obvious that Captain Jones writes from own and close experience, which lends a greater depth to the stories.
In this particular story, Biggles for the first time meets his arch enemy, Erich von Stahlhein. It sets the base for their hostile relationship for many years to come. Without doubt it stems partly from the frustration that von Stahlhein must have felt since he could have made their continuous struggle end there and then, in Palestine 1917, had it not been for his rather incompetent superior officer.
For Swedish readers, like myself, this is an interesting read because an entire chapter is omitted in the Swedish translation (which is rather bad anyway). It is the chapter where Biggles sets out with the very purpose to kill a very boastful German pilot. I guess that the sheer planned cold blooded killing (and subsequent satisfaction!) was too much for Swedish youngsters!
